[3] BACKGROUNDER: Renowned French counter-tenor Dominique Visse directs his remarkable vocal ensemble, Clement Janequin, in a concert of delightful secular songs from 16th century France and Spain. Both Visse and his ensemble have won prestigious European recording awards, and they frequently tour internationally. The ensemble's virtuosity and interesting repertoire is overlaid with a wonderful stage presence, infused with sense of fun and theatricality -- a combination which delights critics and audiences alike. The French chanson is an exclusively secular genre that flourished for the first time during the Renaissance. For the most part, the composers of the day set to music the works of contemporary poets who wrote on secular themes. Clement Janequin, after whom the ensemble was named, was one of the foremost proponents of the chanson, but he was in good company. This concert will include chansons by Janequin and many of his contemporaries, as well as some Spanish battle songs (Chants de bataille). These battle songs and chansons, from the reigns of Francois I of France and Charles V of Spain. deserve to be better known: they make for an extraordinary and utterly compelling repertoire. Nothing like this has ever been heard in Victoria.
