Brief Bio: Barbara Livingston
Barbara Livingston burst unforgettably onto the opera stage, singing the role of Amelia in Pacific Opera Victoria's 1998 production of Verdi's Un ballo in maschera. Her tenor was Richard Margison. Since that time, Barbara Livingston has gone from one triumph to the next. A year after her remarkable debut in Victoria, B.C., she was working with the San Francisco Opera Company, covering Carol Vaness in the role of Amelia in Verdi's Ballo.
Ms. Livingston has continued to perform the larger works of Verdi, among them Il Trovatore, Ernani and the Requiem. She has performed these works with Opera Saskatchewan (Il Trovatore), Opera Lyra Ottawa (Il Trovatore and Ballo) and Pacific Opera Victoria (Il Trovatore). She is becoming a much sought after soprano for Verdi's Requiem, performing it with the Victoria Symphony, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Orchestra London, the Elora Festival and the London Fanshawe Symphonic Chorus. Ms. Livingston maintains an active concert career, performing with many of Canada's leading orchestras.
Ms. Livingston is currently developing a new recital program with her friend and coach Robert Holliston in Victoria, B. C., where she is a member of the faculty of the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Ms. Livingston teaches private voice lessons at the Conservatory and is the Assistant Artistic Director of the renowned VCM Opera Studio program. Ms. Livingston was awarded the George and Jane Heffelfinger Pacific Opera Victoria Artist of the Year for 1998/1999. Visit for more career details.

Canadian Pacific Ballet Presents
Riccardo Drigo's La Flute Magique
Canadian Pacific is pleased to present its first full-length ballet with the 1893 Riccardo Drigo classic - La Flute Magique. The production stars dancers Shandelle Sporer as Lise, Graham McMonagle as Luc and Ursula Szkolak as Apollina (The Hermit). La Flute Magique draws on the legendary magical flute, which judges a persons worth and resolves the good persons problems. The production is danced to the score commissioned from Riccardo Drigo for the St. Petersburg Imperial Ballet School in 1893, and follows its synopsis. Little remains of the original Ivanov choreography; Canadian Pacific Ballet Co-Artistic Director Roberta Taylor has undertaken the recreation of the work, respecting the choreographic language of the time, while illustrating the unique emotional beauty of the music and narrative. Aesthetically, the production references the appearance of the ballet as Anna Pavlova toured it, setting the story and the characters of Luc and Lise, in eighteenth century France, as pastoral peasants. Award-winning Scenic Designer Bill Adams is creating the pastoral setting of the ballet; Costume Designer and Canadian Pacific Ballet Co-Artistic Director Graham McMonagle has filled the scene with peasants, a comic antihero and a forest full of poofs.
Venue: McPherson Playhouse

The Canadian Pacific Ballet
Summer Lecture Series
(La Esmeralda)
Lecture 1: Choosing the Ballet, Libretto / Story
Join Roberta Taylor and Graham McMonagle as we discuss and illuminate the rational behind our choices of repertoire for Canadian Pacific Ballet.
Determining factors and subjects of discussion include:
- Propriety of the principle roles for the cast at hand
- Optimum style of production within a season or repertoire
- The general and specific appeal of the narrative, musical score, and historical style associated with a production
- Budgets (both fiscal and timely) required by the production.
Lecture 2: Music and Design of La Esmeralda
Discussion surrounding the development of a premiere for the company, whether a reconstruction of an historical work, or the creation of a new work. Taylor and McMonagle discuss the process of researching an extant score, not only for the basic indicators of the choreographic structure and furtherance of the narrative, but indicators of style, whether visual or historic, and location, whether real or ephemeral, emotional or visual. It is during this process that the manual application of the libretto is developed, and the historical visual references are discussed and selected.
Lecture 3: Constructing the Wardrobe and Scenery, and creating the choreography for La Esmeralda
Taylor and McMonagle reveal some of the manual processes of producing the parts of a ballet. This will include discussion surrounding wardrobe and scenic construction, and the historically informed method chosen for production of a specific garment or scenic element, and discussion surrounding classical choreographic structure and process.
Lecture One: Tuesday, July 31, 2007 - 6PM to 7:30PM
Lecture Two: Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 6PM to 7:30PM
Lecture Three: Tuesday, August 14, 2007 - 6PM to 7:30PM
Cost: $25.00 per lecture or $60.00 for all three
Location: Canadian Pacific Ballet Studios - Suite 223-560 Johnson Street (Market Square)
