FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BUSINESS COMMUNITY PRODUCES FIRST ANNUAL
PRO ARTS FESTIVAL FOR GVCRD

Capital Arts Festival 2006—October 5-18, 2006

BACKGROUNDER

VICTORIA, B.C. (May 5, 2006) Produced exclusively by members of the business community and presented by Heaven-on-Earth Marketing and Image Management Company, Capital Arts Festival 2006 aims to promote and create public awareness and appreciation of the arts, culture, and heritage in the Greater Victoria Capital Regional District.

Starting October 5 and running to October 18, Capital Arts Festival 2006 is a celebration of Music, Dance, Theatre, Visual Arts and Literary Arts by practicing professional artists who live and work in the GVCRD.

"In developing a regional, annual cultural festival, our goal is to showcase and promote practicing professional artists from all arts disciplines as a whole, unified group. With a large percentage of artists in Canada living in the GVCRD, the time has come to establish a professional caliber event—produced entirely by members of the business community—which unifies and strengthens the professional arts community and benefits local businesses in our region", said Rob Vickery, CAF Executive Director and festival founder.

The enthusiasm and spirit of community support by members of the business community has been outstanding! With operational resources being provided through private business equity and sponsorships, Capital Arts Festival 2006 fulfilled an important goal of providing free participation to our members groups and venues.

The administrative and operational authority for this year’s event, known as the Capital Arts Festival (CAF), is at-arms-length to our member groups’ programming, thereby giving a unique approach to our event. The following analogy is presented to show how the administrative and operational authority operates. The relationship between CAF and our member groups is similar in scope to the way in which the federal and provincial governments operate within Canada: CAF is responsible for the administration, marketing and advertising strategic plan for the entire event (federal level); member groups are responsible for their own programming, marketing and advertising (provincial level).

Practicing professional artists have reached a high level of development in their chosen fields of endeavour, and are recognized for their professionalism and accomplishments within their communities, by their peers and through their affiliations with professional member groups, societies and associations; this festival also includes the participation by numerous small businesses which are independently owned and operated.

Featured is a diverse array of member groups and venues throughout the region: from large and formal exhibitions, such as the Sidney Fine Art Show 2006—being held in Sidney at the Mary Winspear Community Cultural Centre; to small and intimate dining establishments in Victoria, such as Ristorante La Piola—enjoy delicious, regional Italian cuisine and a wide variety of music by professional musicians, including John MacArthur, Don Cox, Miranda Sage, and Brad Prevedoros.

Capital Arts Festival 2006 is honoured to have the Eagle Feather Gallery as one of our members. First Nations artists Doug LaFortune, Coast Salish; Tony Hunt Jr., Kwakwaka'wakw and Clifford George, Nuu-cha-nulth will be featured. There will be onsite carving and an exhibition of contemporary and traditional artwork from the three Island Nations.

With over 30% of the regional population supporting the arts, culture and heritage in the GVCRD, the aim of the Capital Arts Festival 2006 is to offer both our citizens and tourists a truly unique, cultural experience.

Venue 2: Italian Bakery and Ristorante La Piola

La Piola means roughly a ‘gathering place’ in Piemontese dialect (Piemonte is a region in Northern Italy). It would typically be a place where people talk and play games while they enjoy food and drink, so the atmosphere would be casual. Our La Piola achieves this by having a specialty deli mercato and a small, intimate casual dining room which houses professional artworks for sale; features evening entertainment by professional musicians and, of course, authentic Italian food and drinks.

Sample of the professional musicians we stage:

John MacArthur Take Two/Take Three jazz (Venue 12). John brings in musicians such as Don Cox, Alfons Fear, Kal Wood, Miranda Sage, and Rebecca Everett.

Cold Cut Combo: Aaron Watson & Chris Sartisohn are a jazz duo who play accordion & guitar for a gypsy swing & Musette feel.

Oliver Swain Trio - Oliver is a Juno nominated double bass player and his back up guitarists join him to play Parisian jazz.

Brad Prevedoros is an award winning classical guitarist from Galiano Island.
Sunyata - Ken Hall & Jim Gawne play Latin/North African jazz fusion.

Venue 3: Theatre Inconnu presents

The Butcher's Apron by Charles Tidler

Tidler has created hysterically funny – yet poignant - portraits of these artists. Theatre Inconnu has a 20-year history of unique production in Victoria. This play, written by one of Canada’s most significant playwrights, extends that tradition.
