Executive Director's Message
Presented by Heaven-on-Earth Marketing and Image Management Company, Capital Arts Festival 2006 aims to promote and create public awareness and appreciation of the arts, culture, and heritage in the Greater Victoria Capital Regional District. Starting October 5 and running to October 18, Capital Arts Festival 2006 is a celebration of Music, Dance, Theatre, Visual Arts and Literary Arts by practicing professional artists who live and work in the GVCRD. Featured is a diverse array of member groups and venues throughout the region: from large and formal exhibitions, such as the Sidney Fine Art Show 2006—being held in Sidney at the Mary Winspear Community Cultural Centre; to small and intimate dining establishments in Victoria, such as Ristorante La Piola—enjoy delicious, regional Italian cuisine and a wide variety of music by professional musicians, including John MacArthur, Don Cox, Miranda Sage, and Brad Prevedoros. Capital Arts Festival 2006 is honoured to have the Eagle Feather Gallery as one of our members. First Nations artists Doug LaFortune, Coast Salish; Tony Hunt Jr., Kwakwaka'wakw and Clifford George, Nuu-cha-nulth will be featured. There will be onsite carving and an exhibition of contemporary and traditional artwork from the three Island Nations. For more venue information, click on to our Venues Page. For your convenience, we offer the following printable PDF files: Capital Arts Festival 2006 Poster/Venue Guide (8.5" x 14"); Capital Arts Festival 2006 Venue Guide Maps and Capital Arts Festival 2006 Calendar of Events. A large percentage of practicing professional artists in Canada live in the GVCRD, yet to date, there is no definitive regional, annual event—produced entirely by members of the business community—that brings together practicing professional artists from all arts disciplines as a whole, unified group. Practicing professional artists have reached a high level of development in their chosen fields of endeavour, and are recognized for their professionalism and accomplishments within their communities, by their peers and through their affiliations with professional member groups, societies and associations; this festival also includes the participation by numerous small businesses which are independently owned and operated. The enthusiasm and spirit of community support by members of the business community has been outstanding! With operational resources being provided through private business equity and sponsorships, Capital Arts Festival 2006 fulfilled an important goal of providing free participation to our members groups and venues. The administrative and operational authority for this year’s event, known as the Capital Arts Festival (CAF), is at-arms-length to our member groups’ programming, thereby giving a unique approach to our event. The following analogy is presented to show how the administrative and operational authority operates. The relationship between CAF and our member groups is similar in scope to the way in which the federal and provincial governments operate within Canada: CAF is responsible for the administration, marketing and advertising strategic plan for the entire event (federal level); member groups are responsible for their own programming, marketing and advertising (provincial level). Capital Arts Festival 2006 gratefully acknowledges the generous support from the business community and all of our sponsors who helped make this festival possible. Many thanks to our member groups and venues for participating in this year’s event, and special thanks go to our administration support staff and volunteers for their hard work and dedication. Finally and most importantly, we thank the public for their support and appreciation of our event. Take in the Capital Arts Festival 2006! Support the professional arts, cultural, and heritage and the many practicing professional artists who live and work in the Greater Victoria Capital Regional District. It’s yours to discover!
