St Luke's Players
"Alice in Wonderland" - a traditional British-style panto
December 21, 2011 - January 2, 2012
St Luke's Hall, 3821 Cedar hill X Road, Victoria

This holiday season, the St. Luke's Players invite you to delight in a mirthful, musical journey with Alice to a place where things become curiouser and curiouser with every step forward. The familiar tale of Alice's adventures through Wonderland with the White Rabbit as her guide is stretched and twisted to create surprises and hilarity zanier than the maddest tea party imaginable in this traditional panto version of Alice in Wonderland. A comic ensemble including Princess Euthanasia and Dame Gladys joins a collection of well-loved Wonderland characters in a musical, madcap romp where audience members can boo the evil Queen of Hearts and cheer for Alice and her good-hearted friends. The St. Luke's Players proudly present "Alice in Wonderland" this holiday season (December 21, 2011 - January 2, 2012). Directed by Dave and Helena Hitchcock, featuring a cast of 25 actors, this show offers Panto-riffic delight for all ages.

8th Annual Poetry Gabriola Festival
February 16 - 19

Poetry Gabriola had an amazing year in 2011 with the creation of the Poetry Yurt at the Commons and a full summer program of performance labs.
Now we're kicking off 2012 in a big way - with the 8th Annual Poetry Gabriola Festival! Newly positioned on the calendar to chase away the winter blues, this year's celebration of literature, spoken word, and music runs from Thursday, February 16 to Sunday, February 19 at the Dragon's Lodge on Gabriola Island.
The four evening mainstage performances feature artists from across Canada, including six British Columbia poets commissioned to create new works. This year's commissioned poets are Susan Musgrave, Gregory Scofield, Barbara Adler, CR Avery, Jordan Scott and Tim Lander, and will be appearing through a special initiative formed in partnership with the BC Arts Council.
As well as four feature evening presentations, 2012 will offer afternoon events, salons, workshops, school shows, cameo performances, and of course the return of the hit event, Knock-Knock, Who's There? This FREE, family-friendly, site-specific installation features local and visiting artists performing in the 11 teeny, tiny cabins on the grounds of the Dragon's Lodge.
Join us on Facebook and Twitter!
See you at the festival!!

Throughout his career, Herbert Siebner demonstrated a keen interest in abstract expressionism through his prints and paintings. These works feature bold gesture and rich colour as integral components. Mythology, dreams, poetry and sensuality are all key elements of how Siebner created art and manipulated the surface of his paintings and works on paper. "Why should I care about style? When I start painting, I never know what will come out. I start as innocent as a child."

Victoria Visionaries with Robert Amos-Jack Wise: Cosmic Calligraphy
April 17, 7 - 9pm
Eclectic Gallery 2170 Oak Bay Ave

Victoria has been and continues to be home to some of Canada's most brilliant artists. In 1971, the "Limners" incorporated as a society of 19 artists of diverse styles and media bridging the gamut of subjects from figurative to pure abstraction. For 40 years, the Limners and associates have proven to be a powerhouse of inspiration and exceptional art enriching the cultural scene in Victoria, and bridging this community to the global art world.
Jack Wise, artist, poet, teacher, and long time British Columbia resident, found great solace in the painting process. A deeply spiritual man, he believed in the importance and meaning of individual brushstrokes, imparting to his students a zen-like approach to making art one's own way. He was extremely well read in many subjects including physics, world religions, and Asian art. In 1974, Jack Wise helped found the Victoria College of Art, and at the invitation of Flemming Jorgensen, taught at the Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts. "Whenever I'm totally lost in a painting through one hundred percent attention, I don't exist. I'm just simply not there."

Victoria Visionaries with Robert Amos-Pat Martin Bates and Walter Dexter: Living Limners
April 19, 7 - 9pm
Eclectic Gallery 2170 Oak Bay Ave

Victoria has been and continues to be home to some of Canada's most brilliant artists. In 1971, the "Limners" incorporated as a society of 19 artists of diverse styles and media bridging the gamut of subjects from figurative to pure abstraction. For 40 years, the Limners and associates have proven to be a powerhouse of inspiration and exceptional art enriching the cultural scene in Victoria, and bridging this community to the global art world.
Pat Martin Bates pioneered the whole idea of the monoprint, creating single-edition, individually crafted perforated prints with back lighting. In recognition of her contribution to international printmaking, she won the prestigious Gold Medal at the Norwegian International Biennale of Printmaking in 1986 and the esteemed Global Graphics Award from Holland in 1993. Pat Martin Bates continues to live her life fully as an artist and ambassador for the arts. "There is a thin silver thread between where the real world leaves off and the unreal world begins. I try to balance on that thread...to dance on that point."
Calgary-born Walter Dexter, recognized by the ceramics community as a pioneer in raku, is known primarily for his bold innovative techniques and high-fired stoneware. In 1962 he was awarded the silver medal at the International Ceramics Exhibition in Prague. His works are a statement of pure imagination. Highly collectible, Walter Dexter continues to produce extraordinary ceramics in his Oak Bay studio. "I find my greatest pleasure in doing the work... to free my mind from extraneous interruptions and thoughts."

The paintings are an expression of the spirit, energy, confusion, surprise, excitement, tragedy, unpredictability, drama, and innocence we have collectively experienced through lifetimes. The work draws from the vulnerability and consciousness gained through these experiences without their graphic portrayal.
Out of the raw elements of color and line, I am challenged to impose a visual order that transcends the randomness and establishes emotional and intellectual depth. To be truly inspirational it means following 'a divine impulse of delight'. And so I look for this and follow. I like to let a painting emerge as unhindered as possible from the white canvas of the uncatalogued mind.
In my new work I will be following an element of mystery as the paintings subtly approach image without becoming anything at all, so that in striving for conceptual meaning the viewer is gently turned back to the pure aesthetic experience.

Sing! Presents Tenore - Concert
May 11, 7pm
Main Theatre
Chilliwack Cultural Centre

Sing! is proud to announce TENORE, the already highly acclaimed group that burst onto the Canadian music scene in 2011, claiming their rights to three Gospel Music Awards in the process. The concert will see TENORE return to Chilliwack with their all new show on Friday, May 11th after last Spring's sold-out event. Sing! Presents TENORE is an uplifting and joyful concert experience centered around three gifted tenors that will lift you out of your seats and put a smile on your face with their heartfelt renditions of beloved gospel songs and inspirational favourites. Shane Wiebe, a former top-five contestant on Canadian Idol whom Lionel Ritchie once described as a "talent that is unrivalled," believes the song choices are what endear audiences to TENORE. He notes, "What's interesting about our music is that the melody is always very familiar, allowing audiences to sing along. TENORE takes these familiar songs and infuses an adrenaline rush." This year's show takes place at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre at 7pm – don't miss out!

Vetta Chamber Music – Beloved Piano Trios
May 11
West Point Grey United Church

This is the final concert of Vetta's 26th season! Join Anastasia Markina, Eugene Osadchy and Joan Blackman for a delightful evening of piano trios. What could be more charming than Mozart in a happy key like E major? Along with Mozart they will be playing Brahms Piano Trio No. 2 in C major. Also the Smetena Piano Trio which is full of passion! Parts of it remind one of Rachmaninov, and other parts feel suspiciously like Tango…. Perhaps a pride and love of country generates this outpouring of beautiful feelings. We do hope you will enjoy these pieces as much as the musicians enjoy playing them.

Saanich West Studio Tour
Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13, 11am to 4pm
Venue: rural roads in Saanich West

Renowned ceramicist Meira Mathison and guest artist Sandra Dolph will be among the featured artists on this year's Saanich West Studio Tour.
The Mothers' Day weekend event on May 12 and 13 invites visitors to combine a tour of Saanich in the spring with visits to seven studios where 18 artists and artisans will display their work. Six of the studios are in scenic locations, surrounded by woods or overlooking attractive vistas in rural Saanich.
Mathison, whose high-fired altered porcelain is sold across Canada and the United States, will share her studio overlooking the flats off Hastings Street with Galiano Island potter Sandra Dolph, well-known for work that incorporates her love of the west-coast environment in such elements as a "lichen" glaze and natural objects found around her island home.
Seven artisans will display their work at the forest studio of potter Joy Finlay, off Interurban Road: five potters, potter-author Rosemary Neering and baker Ray Drone. Other rural stops on the tour feature potters, sculptors, glassworkers and other artisans. Potter Dan Krystalowich will be showing his work at his pottery supply house, Victoria Clay Art.
Also part of the tour are sponsors Georgie's Café and garden supply house Urban Oasis.
The tour route will be marked by yellow roadside signs. A tour map is online at http://www.gobc.ca/tours/saanich-west-studio-tour-2012_33 or in the tour brochure available from participating artisans or at many local outlets, including the four Saanich recreation centres. Studios are open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

July 2012

Theatre Under the Stars
Season runs from July 8 to August 18. Shows run alternately with an 8pm curtain.
Malkin Bow, Stanley Park

For our 66th season Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) presents the Vancouver premiere of the Tony Award-winning Titanic: A New Musical along with beloved Broadway classic The Music Man. The season opens on July 8 and shows run on alternating nights until August 18.
One hundred years ago on April 10 1912, the ocean liner Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic, never to arrive.  In the masterful hands of composer Maury Yeston and librettist Peter Stone (the writer whose re-imagining of Annie Get Your Gun lit up TUTS' 2008 season), tragedy is transmuted into a riveting and inspiring work of musical theatre. The hopes and dreams of rich and poor, cowards and lion-hearts, lovers and enemies are woven together into a richly-layered tapestry, celebrating the power of the human spirit in the tradition of Les Miserables and Ragtime.
Titanic: A New Musical won five Tony Awards on Broadway, including Best Score and Best Musical. The 2012 TUTS production will be directed and choreographed by Max Reimer, the acclaimed theatre director and former artistic managing director of the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company. Titanic will also feature musical direction by Kevin Michael Cripps.
In counterpoint to the sweeping scope of Titanic comes the ageless musical comedy of The Music Man. The talented creative team that delivered last summer's hit Anything Goes takes the lead on another beloved Broadway classic (incidentally also set in 1912!): the story of charming con man Harold Hill, who descends on glum River City, Iowa posing as a marching band organizer who will keep the town kids out of trouble by creating a boys' band. His scam is almost flawless - until he runs into the town piano teacher and librarian, Marian, who ultimately captures his heart. With a colourful cast of zany characters, huge musical numbers and a sweet sentimental story, The Music Man will delight TUTS audiences all summer long.
The Music Man is directed by Sarah Rodgers with choreography by Dayna Tekatch and Music Direction by Christopher King.
In addition to these two great shows, TUTS is pleased to announce two new and exciting offers for 2012.

The first is RAIN INSURANCE, sponsored by Mardon Insurance.  For an optional $5 per ticket, patrons can purchase the peace of mind that comes with the ability to switch their tickets for another night in case of inclement weather.
