The Capital Regional District (CRD) is the regional government for the 13 municipalities and three electoral areas that are located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. Headquartered in Victoria, the CRD includes the southern Gulf Islands and Saanich peninsula, the Western Communities and the southwestern coast from Sooke through to Port Renfrew.
The CRD provides regional governance and services for the entire Capital Region, such as passing bylaws, distributing water supply, disposing of sewage and managing garbage and recycling, and managing 30 regional parks and trails. To facilitate services or projects that are specific to only part of the region, the CRD creates partnerships between member municipalities and electoral areas.
The CRD fulfills the role of local government in areas which have no municipal government. These areas are known as "electoral areas".
