Comprising 13 municipalities and 3 electoral areas, the Capital Regional
District, (CRD) is one of several regional districts in the province of
British Columbia. Headquartered in Victoria, BC, this region, also known as
Greater Victoria, encompasses Sooke, Victoria, Sidney and the Saanich
Peninsula; the southern Gulf Islands (Salt Spring, Galiano, Pender, Saturna,
Mayne, and several smaller islands), and the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area
(including the unorganized districts of East Sooke, Port Renfrew Jordan
River, and the southern Malahat). The total land area is 2,341.11 square
kilometres (903.90 square miles), with an estimated 2006 population of
359,439.
The CRD has the authority to pass bylaws that are binding in its member
districts and caretakes to the responsibilities in the unorganized districts
of the region. The responsibilities of the CRD include:
- Providing funding for non-profit arts groups
- Administering the water supply
- Providing public health services
- Overseeing 30 regional parks and reserves covering 10,000 hectares (24,
711 acres).
